A Method, Before Anything Else
I was trained as an engineer, took a master’s in nanotechnology, and have spent a working life reducing complicated things to the few variables that actually drive them. I want to turn that same habit on the questions most people are told to either accept on faith or dismiss with a shrug: where does the universe come from, what holds space and time together, and is the ground of it all — in any honest sense — aware?
This essay is not an argument for a conclusion. It is an inquiry with a discipline. The discipline is a single distinction, and I will state it at the start so the reader can hold me to it:
There is a difference between a source and a will. Between the ground of reality being conscious, and a knower having special access to read that ground. Almost every place a beautiful idea goes wrong, it has quietly slid from the first to the second.
Keep that distinction in view and much of what follows sorts itself. Some claims survive it. Some — however seductive — do not. I will be as honest about the second kind as the first, because the temptations are the more instructive half of the story.
Does the Universe Have an Outside?
The instinct is natural: everything is inside something, so what is the universe inside of? But “outside” is a spatial word, and space is a feature of the universe, not a room it sits in. Asking what is spatially outside the thing that contains all space is close to asking what lies north of the North Pole — the words parse, but the place they point to does not exist.
What the physics does give, cleanly, is that the universe is causally self-contained: nothing outside acts on it, because there is no outside from which to act. There is even a striking numerical coincidence — the mass of the observable universe has a “collapse radius” remarkably close to the actual radius of the observable universe, which has led serious cosmologists to wonder, as a minority view, whether our universe might be the interior of a black hole in some larger space. It is a live idea, not a settled one; the coincidence may also be a near-tautology of the universe being flat and at critical density. Honest status: open.
A caution I had to accept even about my own enthusiasm here: you cannot borrow the word “black hole” — which is a precise solution of the equations — while discarding the equations when their consequences are inconvenient. You cannot keep the turtle and refuse its shell. Either we reason inside the physics, or we have left it; we do not get to do both in one breath.
Where Do the Laws Themselves Come From?
This is the question I am most confident about, precisely because the confident answer is a confession of limits. Physics cannot say why there are laws at all, or why these particular ones. It takes them as given and works forward. “Why is there lawful order rather than none” is a genuine terminus.
Every chain of causes, followed back, forces a choice between only three exits. Either the regress runs forever with no bottom; or it stops at something self-existent that needs no prior cause; or it closes on itself in a loop. There is no fourth option. And here is what is rarely said plainly: theism, physics, and Vedanta all take the same exit — the self-existent ground. Theism calls it God. Physics calls it the initial state, or the laws themselves. Vedanta calls it Brahman. They do not disagree about the structure; they disagree only about the name and character of the stopping-point — whether it is personal, impersonal-lawful, or pure consciousness. That disagreement is not forced by any evidence we possess. It is chosen.
The measuring sciences do not fail here. They reach their own honest edge and say: beyond this, we take the order as given. A ruler is not wrong for being unable to weigh what it measures.
The Oldest Question, and the One Honest Crack: Consciousness
We know an enormous amount about the correlates of consciousness — which brain states accompany which experiences, mapped with growing precision. Damage a region, lose an aspect of awareness; anaesthesia interrupts it and returns it. All of that is real progress on what philosophers call, half-sarcastically, the easy problem.
But there is a gap no map of correlates has closed. Why is there something it is like to be that activity at all? Why is the brain not simply an excellent information-processor working in the dark, with no inner experience whatsoever? You can, in principle, write the complete physical account of a person seeing red — the wavelength, the retina, the neural cascade, the spoken report “I see red” — and nowhere in that complete account does the felt redness become necessary. This is the hard problem, and it is genuinely unsolved — not for want of instruments, but in a way where we scarcely agree what a solution would even look like.
This is the one place where “reduce it to physics” turns and asks physics to expand. If experience cannot be built from parts that have no experience — and centuries of trying have not built it — then perhaps it was never assembled; perhaps consciousness is fundamental, a basic feature of reality like mass or charge, present in some minimal way throughout and merely organised into rich human form by brains. This is not fringe mysticism; sober contemporary philosophers hold it precisely because the alternative has stalled for so long. The Vedic intuition that consciousness is the ground rather than a late product is, on this specific question, not the weak position. It is live.
Here the coastline map runs out and the sea floor begins. This is the honest crack in the edifice — and it happens to be exactly where the oldest traditions have always pointed.
The Temptations — Examined, Not Endorsed
An inquiry conducted honestly must report not only where it arrived but where it was tempted to arrive, and why it refused. Each of the following is a beautiful idea that fails the discipline stated at the outset — each one slides from a source to a will, or from the ground is aware to and I can read it. I set them down precisely because they are so easy to believe.
The Temptation of the Conscious Black Hole
It is tempting to look at Sagittarius A*, the vast dark centre our galaxy wheels around, and call it a cosmic mind — to map it onto the navel of Vishnu, the still centre from which everything emerges. But the reasoning that gets there is a known trick of the human mind: power reads to us as agency, centrality as intention, mystery as awareness. The physics runs the other way. Seen from outside, a black hole is the simplest object there is — describable by only three numbers, mass, spin and charge. Every candidate ingredient of rich awareness — internal complexity, differentiation, integration — is at its minimum there, not its maximum. If consciousness is fundamental, then a black hole has the same dim baseline as everything else — a flicker, not a throne. What it does not have is a special mind, and the wish to grant it one is a fact about us, not about it.
The Temptation to Find Modern Physics Hidden in Ancient Verse
The Gayatri invokes Savitr — not the visible sun, the tradition insists, but the resplendent generative source of all, “the radiance of a billion suns.” Reduce the metaphor to physics and something true does emerge: the sun is a derivative source; everything traces back to one primordial blaze from which space, time and all structure unfold — and the very faculty that now contemplates it is itself matter condensed from that same origin. The seer is the source, looking back at itself. That is not mysticism; every atom in the eye was forged in the fire it studies.
But there is a line, and crossing it is the error. To read a specific mantra as encoding a specific modern mechanism — to say a verse of praise “really means” nuclear fusion — is to make the text say anything, and a text that can be made to say anything tells us nothing. The honest reading finds a genuine rhyme between the ancient intuition of a single generative source and the physicist’s initial state. It does not smuggle the equations back into the Sanskrit and then marvel at having found them there. The rhyme is real. The retrofit is not.
The Temptation of the Special Seer
Beneath both of the above sits the deepest temptation of all: that the person doing the inquiry has privileged access — that where instruments fail, my perception succeeds; that a sufficiently prepared mind can simply see what measurement cannot reach. This is the most flattering idea a thinker can have, which is exactly why it deserves the most suspicion. That an outcome, a truth, or a destiny feels certain as it arrives carries no information about whether it is true — the felt force of an insight and its validity are simply different things, and the whole discipline of honest thought lives in keeping them apart.
Incomprehension cuts both ways. If the totality is beyond the ruler, it is equally beyond the seer. The unknown takes no one’s side — it does not favour the mystic’s reading over the measurer’s. It simply sits there, unknown, indifferent to which of us finds it more beautiful.
What Deeds Actually Leave Behind
Not everything the old vocabulary carries is a temptation to be resisted. Take karma, stripped of any cosmic ledger and any moral bookkeeping. In its plainest sense — deeds leave traces that shape present capacity — it is not mysticism at all. It is mechanism. Every hour of genuine practice physically rewires the brain; today’s aptitude is the deposited residue of yesterday’s action. Action becomes trace becomes disposition. Here the oldest teaching and modern neuroscience simply shake hands.
The distinction worth drawing is between that — call it karma as consequence — and karma as allotment, a destiny handed out in advance. The first is checkable and, more to the point, empowering: not “it was written,” but “I practised, and the practice became the capacity.” The second explains everything after the fact and forbids nothing in advance, which is another way of saying it explains nothing. Keep the first. It is also, quietly, the more dignified belief — it returns authorship to the person doing the work.
Where the Ruler Ends
Reading the whole inquiry back, one shape repeats. At each turn there is a real gap — a genuine limit of what the measuring sciences can reach. And at each turn the temptation is to fill that gap with a named cause we cannot test, and then with our own perception of it. Where the gap is filled that way, the idea bends. Where the gap is left standing — “we do not know” — the idea holds.
The gaps are all genuine. The measuring sciences really are incomplete — not “wrong,” which is a lazy word, but incomplete, the way a map of the coastline is not wrong for failing to chart the sea floor. And into that incompleteness a beautiful name slides so smoothly that the substitution cannot be felt. The emptier the gap, the more satisfying the name that fills it — and the less it has been earned.
If the whole discipline had to reduce to a single clause to watch, it would be this. “The totality is beyond all knowing” is humility, and it brings a kind of peace. “The totality is beyond all knowing but open to me” is the same sentence with one clause added — and it is an entirely different thing. The same mind, the same night, one clause apart. That clause is the thing to watch — in every grand idea, and most of all in oneself.
